10 Ways to Use Your iPod for Business

iPods at work aren't just for tuning out your co-workers anymore. Many highly regarded companies are promoting efficiency in the workplace by using iPods as training tools, sales instruments, mobile learning devices, promotional incentives, communications pods and more. Using audio and video files and an array of available adapters and docks, the iPod can be greatly utilized for business. Their small size and great capacity (the Nano, available in 4GB and 8GB models, is just 6.55mm thin and the Classic, with up to 160GB, still fits in your hand) make them ideal for business people on the go.

Here are ten ways that small business owners can jump on the "iPod for business" bandwagon and make their work lives more efficient, which, as you know, only makes your entire life that much more fun too:

  1. Record preparatory notes for a client meeting or upcoming speech and listen to them on the go.
  2. Take recordings of meetings or seminars on the road and share them easily with co-workers.
  3. Carry photos, video presentations of your products or services or beneficial podcasts in your pocket to client meetings; no more whipping out the laptop at a crowded bar or restaurant.
  4. Listen to recorded meeting minutes and more at the gym or on a walk in the park-no more missing out on exercise in the name of work.
  5. Provide training and sales support via uploadable MP3, and it might save you money on paper, binders, shipping or even a trip to deliver it.
  6. Review critical client information, audio books or other subject matter while you travel.
  7. Practice a second language on the move; in no time, you'll be prepared for your international business trip.
  8. Provide hands-on training, when you can't do it in person, via MP3 recording and an iPod; the trainee can simultaneously listen and physically practice the task hands on.
  9. Provide an iPod loaded with a sales presentation to potential clients or as a gift to loyal customers. You can even get your logo embossed on them.
  10. Along with any and all of the above, use your iPod as a portable backup device for important data files. Your calendar and address book, although not editable, are viewable on the iPod, and you can set them up to synchronize with your computer.

Of course, as with all mobile technology, make sure to keep client and corporate privacy and security in check when using an iPod for business. With the appropriate controls in place, the iPod really can serve as another tool to make small business ownership more efficient and increasingly more mobile.
